Cathy Hutchinson suffers from paralysis that has left her unable to move her arms and legs for the past 15 years, but thanks to Brown University researchers, she was recently able to use a mind-controlled robot arm to drink her morning coffee.

Because the pathways between the brain and the limbs are cut off in paralysis cases, the Brown team decided to skip those pathways altogether and send signals directly from a brain-implanted sensor to the robot limb.

The technology still has a ways to go — researchers want to miniaturize it and create a wireless version — but it could be a major breakthrough in allowing people with paralysis to accomplish more tasks on their own.

The first clip from the CW’s Arrow — which has just been picked up for the network’s fall lineup — features an out-of-costume Ollie Queen (Stephen Amell) getting into fighting shape and showing off his impressive archery skills, as well as revealing the show’s official logo.

It looks like Arrow is going to go the voiceover narration route to reveal Ollie’s inner thoughts — in this clip, we learn that the Green Arrow’s debut mission involves foiling an abduction.

Arrow also stars Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance/Black Canary, Colin Donnell as Tommy Merlyn, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, and Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen.

geek news - Toonami Resurrection of the Day

It’s a Christmas mid-may miracle! Adult Swim has responded to the massive fan campaign for the return of beloved anime programming block Toonami, scheduling a relaunch for later this month.

The return of Toonami started as an April Fool’s joke, but an outpouring of fan love and a Twitter campaign convinced the network to make it real.

I’d like to think it was Richie Branson’s Toonami rap that sealed the deal.

Toonami returns May 26. No word yet on the exact lineup of shows, but Toonami host T.O.M. will be back in all his CGI glory.

Hot on the heels of the first promo image from CBS’ Sherlock Holmes show, Elementary, the network has now released a behind-the-scenes video with a few minutes of footage from the show.

The clips mostly focus on the relationship between the analytical, not-so-sensitive Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and his more emotionally-aware counterpart, Lucy Liu’s Dr. Joan Watson.

Oh, and we get a good look at Sherlock Holmes’ heavily-tattooed(!) torso.

What do you think? Potential winner, pale imitation of the BBC’s version, or somewhere in between?

geek news - This Is Inexplicably Free, You Should Watch It of the Day

Director Duncan Jones’ debut film, the 2009 sci-fi suspense flick Moon, starring Sam Rockwell, is currently streaming for free on YouTube, for some reason.

Moon is the story of an astronaut nearing the end of his three-year mining contract on the far side of the moon when the isolation finally starts to get to him, and things just get stranger from there.

The film rated a respectable 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s a solid way to kill an hour and a half on YouTube.

Freshly-renewed sitcom Community is no stranger to creative novelty episodes — remember the claymation and anime sequences? — and this week’s episode is no exception. Tomorrow night, the study group goes 8-bit (more like 16-bit, really, but let’s leave the nitpicking to Abed).

In the season finale, the Greendale crew adopts retro video game avatars to help rich old guy Pierce keep his family fortune by defeating a corporate villain (Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo “Gus Fring” Esposito).

Community’s multi-part season finale kicks off Thursday night at 8 p.m., and continues at 9 and 9:30.

Six seasons, a movie, and a video game!

geek news - Watchmen Toaster of the Day

Are DC and Warner Bros. intentionally trolling Alan Moore at this point? Launching a prequel to Watchmen despite Moore’s strong disapproval is one thing, but now they’re licensing Watchmen‘s iconic vigilante/social critic, Rohrshach, for use on a toaster.

The toaster sports a Watchmen logo and a group shot of the main characters, and it will brown your toast to look like Rohrshach’s famous mask (albeit without the randomly shifting patterns).

It would be funny if weren’t so tragic.

geek news - Walking Dead Obstacle Course of the Day

Run for your lives — or walk as fast as you can while surrounded by thousands of fellow geeks, anyway — because Robert Kirkman is bringing a Walking Dead-themed obstacle course to this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

The zombie obstacle course, called The Walking Dead Escape, will be set up at Petco Park and will feature interactive displays where participants can make decisions that influence whether they’re “infected” by the time they make it to the end.

You don’t have to play a survivor/potential zombie victim to participate, though. You can also “be a walker who joins the ranks of the undead; or a spectator who watches from the sidelines during an Escape Party.”

The Escape will be open from July 12-15, running concurrently with Comic Con.

The latest video promo for Prometheus, “Quiet Eye,” focuses on Noomi Rapace’s archaeologist character, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, and introduces some unnerving Weyland Corp. polygraph tech that scans speakers during video calls.

This is Shaw’s case — presumably made to corporate visionary Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) — that she should be chosen to lead the Prometheus mission.

Prometheus lands in theaters June 8.
