Gaming Café Death of the Day

Feb. 3, 2012

Gaming Café Death of the Day

Gaming Café Death of the Day: A 23-year-old gamer died in a Taipei gaming café and remained there undiscovered for nine hours, Sky News reports.

Police said there were 30 other gamers in the café when Chen Rong-yu was found by a waitress.

He apparently passed away due to a pre-existing heart condition. Authorities say cold weather, fatigue, and lack of movement while playing may have triggered a blood clot that caused cardiac arrest. The cause of his death is still being investigated.

Rong-yu was last seen alive by a waitress around noon on Wednesday, talking on his cell phone. He had been playing League of Legends.

Costumed Character Altercation of the Day

Feb. 3, 2012

Costumed Character Altercation of the Day: A fight between costumed characters on Hollywood Boulevard Thursday evening ended with a man dressed as either Captain Jack Sparrow or Ozzy Ozzbourne pepper-sprayed in the face by Catwoman.

The fight started around 5:30 in front of the Kodak Theater. Catwoman told reporters that she only broke out the Mace after the black-wigged man and someone in an alien costume antagonized her repeatedly while she was posing with tourists.

Willy Wonka and Captain America corroborated her story.

Paramedics treated the pirate-and-or-rocker at the scene, but he was not taken to a hospital. Catwoman said he and the alien were “rambling nonsense” and both possibly intoxicated.

Giant Prawn of the Day

Feb. 3, 2012

Giant Prawn of the Day

Giant Prawn of the Day: Scientists have discovered a giant prawn, nearly a foot long, in New Zealand’s Kermadic Trench.

The “supergiant amphipod,” found 4.3 miles below the surface of the ocean, is ten times as large as a regular prawn.

A supergiant anthropod has only been found once before, in the 1980s. Researchers at the New Zealand Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research say they have yet to determine whether the creature is part of a newly-discovered species.

NASA Astronaut Application News of the Day

Feb. 3, 2012

NASA Astronaut Applications of the Day

NASA Astronaut Application News of the Day: NASA says its recent call for astronaut applications received 6,300 responses. That’s double the number of applicants the agency usually gets, and second only to 1978′s record-setting 8,000 applications.

Although the recruitment announcement came at the end of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, potential astronauts may have been attracted by the chance to work on the next generation of NASA spacecraft, which the agency hopes will take humans farther into space than ever before.

An even bigger factor may be that NASA put applications online for the first time, letting candidates submit their resumés through government job site USAJobs.gov.

Only 15 of the 6,300 applicants will be selected to join the astronaut class of 2013.

RIP: Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron

Feb. 3, 2012

RIP: Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron

RIP: Micron CEO Steve Appleton was killed when his experimental fixed-wing plane crashed at Boise Airport Friday morning. He was the only person on board.

Appleton, an experienced aerobatic pilot, reportedly aborted one takeoff and then tried again five minutes later. His plane crashed shortly after the second takeoff, and just after he told air traffic controllers he was coming back in to land.

Appleton was known as a risk-taker as both a pilot and a CEO. After suffering minor injuries in a 2004 crash, he told the press, “My description of myself, whether I’m the CEO of a very competitive industry or whether I happen to fly aerobatics in airplanes, it’s all one package.”

Micron released the following statement:

“Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time. Steve’s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large.”

Appleton, who was 51, is survived by his wife and four children.

Missing Antarctic Researchers of the Day

Feb. 3, 2012

Missing Antarctic Researchers of the Day

Missing Antarctic Researchers of the Day: A team of Russian researchers drilling into the two-mile-thick layer of ice over Antarctica’s Lake Vostok has been out of communication for the past five days.

The team, from Russia’s Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) had been drilling for weeks in an attempt to reach the subterranean lake, which hasn’t been exposed to air in more than 20 million years.

The operation could have run into a snag for a number of reasons, including ice shifting around the tunnel or trapped gas rising explosively from the lake.

One of their American colleagues, Dr. John Priscu of Montana State University, says he has no way to reach the drilling team, and they’re coming up on the deadline to winterize their station before Antartica’s summer season ends.

“Temps are dropping below [minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit] and they have only a week or so left before they have to winterize the station,” he told Fox News. “I can only imagine what things must be like at Vostok Station this week.”

ACTA Update of the Day

Feb. 3, 2012

ACTA Update of the Day

ACTA Update of the Day: Although protests against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) didn’t stop the Polish government from signing the treaty last month along with 21 other EU member countries, they may have convinced the government not to ratify the treaty.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has suspended a vote on the controversial treaty, saying he now feels negotiations weren’t transparent enough and that he approached ACTA from “a 20th century perspective.”

Along with the signatures gathered last month, ACTA needs approval from the parliaments of each individual member state. If Poland doesn’t ratify it, the treaty could be killed.

Meanwhile, the website of the Greek parliament was defaced by Anonymous hackers with an anti-ACTA message, and Bulgaria became the second country (after Poland) where anti-ACTA politicians posed for pictures in Anonymous’ trademark Guy Fawkes mask.

Follow Up of the Day: Anonymous Hacks Law Firm of Iraqi Massacre Defendant

Follow Up of the Day: Anonymous Hacks Law Firm of Iraqi Massacre Defendant

Follow Up of the Day: Hacker collective Anonymous has followed today’s defacement of the Boston Police Department website and release of an FBI conference call recording with a hack of law firm Puckett & Faraj.

The firm is best known for representing Marine Sgt. Frank Wuterich, who led the 2005 Haditha massacre that killed 24 unarmed Iraqis. Wuterich was demoted and received a pay cut, but did not serve time.

Anonymous released 3GB of emails from the Puckett & Faraj, including evidence, testimony and donation records from the Wuterich trial.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to expose the corruption of the court systems and the brutality of US imperialism, we want to bring attention to USMC SSgt Frank Wuterich who along with his squad murdered dozens of unarmed civilians during the Iraqi Occupation,” said an Anonymous statement included with the files.

Puckettfaraj.com is still offline, and the firm hasn’t yet commented on the hack.
