Huge Space Shuttle News Of The Day: Today, private sector shuttle builder SpaceX unveiled its plans for a new 22-story rocket with a payload capacity of a whopping 117,000 lbs called The Falcon Heavy.
While SpaceX already has a NASA contract to restock the ISS with its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule, The Falcon Heavy is expected to rival United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV, which currently serves the Pentagon with it’s puny 50,000-pound capacity to the tune of $275 million per launch.
Once complete, SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy is expected to offer two-and-a-half times the cargo capacity for a third of the price, somewhere around $80-125 million a mission, give or take. Launched by the Silicone Valley business man behind PayPal, Elon Musk vows if all goes as planned, after its test launch sometime next year, The Falcon Heavy will be the most cost effective rocket on the market.
