Spoiler Alert of the Day: DC Comics dropped a Superman shocker in Action Comics #900. If you haven’t had a chance to get to your local comic store this week, turn away now to avoid major spoilers.
Throughout his long history, Supes has always fought for “truth, justice and the American way.” In a short story called “The Incident,” he decides that two out of three ain’t bad and renounces his American citizenship.
Don’t get out the pitchforks and kryptonite just yet, though, because it’s complicated. See, the Man of Steel visits Iran to support protesters against an oppressive regime — ooh, topical! — and the world sees that as an act of war. Rather than trying to fly faster than a speeding geopolitical crisis, he diffuses the situation by resigning his citizenship.
How long before Superman birthers accuse the hero of having a liberal agenda and demand to see his long form birth certificate? Oops, already happened!
He keeps explaining that the certificate was destroyed in the explosion of Krypton, but nobody’s ever satisfied.
