Pencil-Necked Weasel of the Day: Author Neil Gaiman is at the center of a controversy over his fee for a talk at a Minnesota public library. Matt Dean, Republican majority leader of the Minnesota Senate called Gaiman “who I hate,” a “pencil-necked little weasel who stole $45,000 from the state of Minnesota.”
Gaiman explained on his blog why his speaking fee was legitimate: it came from a fund that’s meant to be used for bringing speakers to libraries, the money would have disappeared if the library hadn’t spent it, and Gaiman donated the fee to charity anyway.
Matt Dean’s mother didn’t take kindly to her son’s bullying tactics. In an interview with Minnesota Public Radio — coincidentally, one of the institutions whose funding Republicans are trying to eliminate — he said, “My mom is staying with us right now because my wife’s out of town. She was very angry this morning and always taught me not to be a name caller. And I shouldn’t have done it, and I apologize.”
It’s a small (but satisfying) victory for anyone who’s ever been bullied for being a pencil-neck.
