LimeWire Settlement of the Day: File-sharing company LimeWire has settled with the RIAA for $105 million. There were 9.715 pirated tracks at issue in the case, and Limewire could have been on the hook for $150,000 per track if they had fought it out in court and lost.
The RIAA’s policy thus far has been to re-invest the damages from these lawsuits into “education and anti-piracy programs.” As TorrentFreak points out, that means the artists who are supposedly victimized by illegal downloading are unlikely to get a cut of the 9-figure settlement.
