Lunar Power Source of the Day

Lunar Power Source of the Day

Lunar Power Source of the Day: Japan’s Shimizu Corporation has released a plan to build photovoltaic cells across the surface of the moon. The project, called LUNA RING, would be the largest public infrastructure project ever, and could power buildings around the world by harnessing the 13,000 terawatts of solar energy the moon receives every day.

The technology to build LUNA RING already exists: photovoltaic cells, remotely controlled maintenance robots and microwave transmitters to beam power back to Earth. In fact, the cells can be assembled from resources that already exist on the moon. Unfortunately, the project’s cost is so high that a Shimizu spokesperson suggested we’d have to invent a new word for it.

Although it sounds like science fiction, this dream project could start by 2035, according to “very optimistic” estimates.
