Vuvuzela Warning of the Day: Vuvuzelas, the plastic horns that provided the soundtrack to every second of last year’s World Cup in South Africa, aren’t just annoying: they’re also a potential public health risk.
London medical researcher Ruth McNerney noticed the vuvuzelas at the World Cup and undertook a study to understand how the horns might spread germs. Turns out the vuvuzela emits more germ-carrying aerosol particles than regular shouting and screaming.
McNerney’s not saying that she undertook the study specifically to help put an end to the droning scourge that is the vuvuzela, but I think we should read between the lines and give her a medal anyway.
