Douglas Adams Tribute of the Day: Today is the 11th annual Towel Day – a celebration of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams. Carrying a towel around is the traditional way to observe Towel Day, but there are also fan-organized events taking place around the world.
Why a towel? Because, as Adams wrote, it’s about the most massively useful thing an interstellar traveler can have. Plus, towels are quite conspicuous, which should make it easier for hitchhikers to sass their fellow hoopy froods today.
The May the 25th date is, as Adams would no doubt have liked it, basically random. It doesn’t have any significance in the Hitchhiker’s Trilogy, it just happened to be two weeks after Adams’ death, which gave fans some time to plan.
Hothead Games has also chosen Towel Day to announce they’re working on a Hitchhiker’s game.
