Mars Rover Shutdown of the Day: NASA has decided to cut off communication with the Mars rover Spirit, bringing an end to a seven-year mission. Spirit last communicated in March of 2010, and it’s believed that the rover’s components were damaged during a dark martian winter when there wasn’t enough solar power to run its survival heaters.
Spirit is survived by its twin, Opportunity, and NASA plans to launch a next-gen rover called Curiosity in November.
“I think we’ll all sit around and have a sip of Guinness and reminisce about when Spirit was a wee small little rover and look back at the accomplishments and successes rover had over its entire lifetime,” said NASA exec David Lavery, who appears to have confused Spirit with an Irish Rover.
