NASA Deep Space Vehicle of the Day

NASA Deep Space Vehicle of the Day

NASA Deep Space Vehicle of the Day: NASA may be shutting down the Space Shuttle program, but — surprise! — the agency just announced it will launch deep space missions in a new, safer kind of vehicle.

The freshly-unveiled Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV), built by Lockheed Martin, can take a four-person crew of astronauts into deep space for 21 days. It’s “10 times safer during ascent and entry” than the space shuttle, according to NASA. It can also dock with International Space Station.

While the private sector may have taken over from NASA in the low-Earth orbit transportation game, that just leaves more room for NASA to focus on the next step: humans in deep space.
