Camera Drone Launcher Gun of the Day: As if a flare gun weren’t enough fun all on its own, a pair of hackers at Defcon demonstrated how to repurpose the device to fire a spy camera drone.
The design, by Vlad Gostom and Joshua Marpet, was based on a project by Israeli military contractors. The difference is that instead of an M-16-mounted grenade launcher and a Firefly spycam, this one uses a flare gun and a DIY wireless camera. Total cost: under $500.
Apparently the test run of the flare gun didn’t go brilliantly: the drone didn’t fly high enough, and it was traveling too fast to get a good picture. The proof-of-concept was good enough for Gostom and Marpet, though. They intend to build a second prototype that will reach 250 feet in the air.
