Germany Unrestricts Doom of the Day: Doom has been removed from the German government’s list of “Media Harmful to Young Persons” after an appeal by ZeniMax, Bethesda Softworks’ corporate parent.
The list amounts to an “adults only” rating, severely limiting where a title can be sold, including banning it from mainstream stores and restricting mail-order sales. Not surprisingly, the list is mostly made up of hardcore pornography.
Now that Doom is officially less harmful than Germany’s most graphic porn, it’s been assigned a much more reasonable 16+ rating.
Why did ZeniMax — which acquired the Doom copyright back in ’09 — wait until now to appeal the ruling? This could be evidence of a new Doom title in the works, or it could just mean that the company’s legal team had bigger fish to fry over the past two years.
