Netflix DVD Service Becomes Qwikster of the Day: After the negative reaction to Netflix’s decision to split DVD delivery and streaming video into two separate subscriptions, the services are about to become two separate companies. Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service will be called “Qwikster,” and streaming will keep the Netflix name.
Qwikster and Netflix will operate separate websites, and current Netflix DVD subscriptions will be automatically transitioned to Qwikster. The only major change — other than the name — is that Qwikster will offer video game rentals as well as DVDs.
On the streaming side, Netflix says “substantial” additions to the streaming content library are coming in the next few months.
This split must have come together pretty hastily, though, because Netflix didn’t bother to see whether @qwikster was taken on Twitter. Someone named Jason Castillo is either about to cash in bigtime or have his account repossessed by Twitter, depriving the world of tweets like “Bored as sh*t wanna blaze but at the same time I don’t ugh f**k it where’s the bowl at spark me up lls.”
