Photography Stats of the Day

Photography Stats of the Day: Jonathan Good at 1000Memories has made a valiant attempt to graph the number of photos taken worldwide between the invention of the camera and the present day.

His numbers aren’t exact, but they’re close enough to show the absolutely massive effect digital cameras and Facebook have had on our photography habits.

2.5 billion people now own digital cameras, and they’re using them to take an estimated 375 billion photos this year. That’s 10% of the photos that have ever been taken. In one year.

Oh, and 20% of those will be uploaded to the world’s largest photo repository, Facebook, which is now in control of over 140 billion photos. That dwarfs Flickr (at 6 billion) and Instagram (at 150 million), and it’s 10,000 times larger than the photo collection of The Library of Congress.

After the jump: a graph of humanity’s photo output over time.
