A La Carte Cable TV Talks of the Day: U.S. cable TV providers are reportedly at work on a plan to unbundle TV network packages and allow customers to subscribe to individual cable channels.
Although the cable companies have favored expensive bundles and opposed a la carte programming over the past decade, they now say they need it to compete because of a down economy and the rise of streaming TV on the web.
Programming providers like Viacom are likely to oppose the plan, though, because they use bundles to tie their weaker networks to their more popular ones.
Even if a la carte does come to pass, it probably won’t allow customers to pick and choose the exact lineup of networks they want. More likely, it will make programming packages smaller and allow customers to drop the most expensive premium channels, like ESPN and ESPN 2.
