Amazon Kindle Announcements of the Day: Amazon finally unveiled its new Kindle Fire tablet today, along with a touchscreen update to its existing line of Kindle e-readers.
The Kindle Fire, priced at $199, is the Amazon Android tablet everyone’s been speculating about. It’s got a 7″ IPA display and a dual-core processor, and it runs Android wrapped in a custom Amazon UI. It’s also light, weighing in at 14.6 ounces.
The Fire comes with its own “lightning-fast” web browser, Amazon Silk, which is powered by Amazon’s EC2 cloud service. It’s tied to Amazon’s content library, so you can use it to buy books and music, stream movies from Amazon Prime, and download apps from the Amazon App Store. Movies and TV shows will also sync to multiple devices via the Whispersync service Amazon already uses for books.
To hit that $200 price point, Amazon had to leave some things out, though: the Kindle Fire has no 3G connection (just Wi-Fi) and no camera or microphone. The Fire ships November 15th.
As for the updated Kindle e-reader, it’s called the Kindle Touch, and it’s priced at $99 (or $149 for the 3G model).
The Kindle Touch features the familiar Kindle E-Ink display, but replaces the physical keyboard with an infrared touchscreen. It also uses a new “EasyReach” interface that divides the screen into three sections: next, previous and menu. The Touch starts shipping November 21st.
A “lighter, faster” 6″ version of the traditional Kindle is also available for $79, starting today.
As CNET’s Molly Wood pointed out on Twitter, the entire Kindle lineup combined costs less than a 32GB iPad.
