Possible 3D Glasses Price Hike of the Day: The ticket price for a 3D movie may be about to climb even higher, thanks to a decision by Sony to stop paying for 3D glasses for theaters.
Sony sent a letter to theater owners saying it intends to stop providing the glasses, which can cost $5-10 million for a major 3D movie, on May 1, 2012. Theater owners will have to buy their own 3D specs (and probably pass the cost on to moviegoers) just before Sony’s 3D summer movies, Men in Black III and The Amazing Spider-Man, come out.
Sony is pitching the glasses as a new revenue stream for theaters, but owners don’t see it that way, especially after they’ve already paid to convert their screens to 3D.
