Unreal Engine 4 News of the Day: Epic Games founder and technical director Tim Sweeney estimates that the next generation of the company’s Unreal Engine, which powers games like Bioshock and Gears of War 3, could be ready in 2014.
Sweeney told IGN that releasing Unreal Engine 4 is a matter of waiting for gaming hardware to provide the “brute force computing power” it requires.
“Focusing on that horizon enables me to do some really cool things that just aren’t practical today, but soon will be,” he said.
The biggest challenge for the next-gen Unreal Engine will be dynamically balancing the workload between the 20 or more CPU cores we might see in future gaming machines. All that raw computing power won’t mean much if the software can’t take advantage of it.
