Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-Ray Announcement of the Day: CBS has announced that Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray starting in January of 2012. The release coincides with the 25th anniversary of the premiere of TNG.
The Blu-ray editions haven’t merely been upconverted from videotape. Instead, CBS is re-editing each episode from the original negatives, and recomposited all the visual effects from scratch. The finished product will be transferred to HD with 7.1 DTS Master Audio.
The first taste of the newly-restored Next Generation episodes arrives on January 31, in the form of a four-episode sampler called Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level. It includes “Encounter at Farpoint,” “Sins of the Father,” “The Inner Light.”
