Follow Up of the Day: The Air Force has publicly responded to reports that Creech Air Force Base computers used to pilot armed Predator and Reaper drones are infected with malware.
The official line is that the virus is “more of a nuisance than an operational threat” and that drone pilot systems “remained secure throughout the incident.”
Although the virus was initially thought to be a keylogger, the Air Force now says it’s a “credential stealer” that hit a Windows-based mission support network and then spread via portal hard drives.
An anonymous defense official told the AP that the malware “is routinely used to steal log-in and password data from people who gamble or play games like Mafia Wars online.”
The official statement didn’t clarify whether the malware had been fully removed.
