Google Product Shutdown of the Day

Google Services Shutdown of the Day

Google Product Shutdown of the Day: Google has announced that it will shut down a handful of its products in a fall sweep.

The company says it’s closing Google Buzz, Code Search, Jaiku, iGoogle social features, the University Research Program for Google Search and, as previously announced, Google Labs, in order to focus on Google+ and other high-priority projects.

Some of the closures make a lot of sense: Buzz, Jaiku and iGoogle sharing are almost entirely redundant with Google+ features, and the introduction of Google Takeout means users can export their data from the dying services to G+.

Google didn’t explain why Code Search — which indexes open source code on the web — was being shut down, or why university researchers will no longer have API access to search results.

The services will disappear January 15th, 2012. If you want to save your data from any of them, the aforementioned Google Takeout is your best bet.
