Lytro Light Field Camera Launch of the Day

Lytro Light Field Camera Launch of the Day: The Lytro light field camera, which lets photographers adjust the focus of a photo even after they’re done shooting, is headed for the consumer market in 2012.

The camera gathers data with a plenoptic sensor and an array of microlenses, and then turns that into an image. The color, intensity and direction of light in the scene are all stored, so you can make changes to the image later, shifting focus to the foreground, middle or background subjects in your photo.

As if that’s not cool enough, a software update due out sometime next year will allow the Lytro to shoot 3D images.

The Lytro weighs in at just 8 ounces and packs a fixed-iris f2 lens with an 8X optical zoom. It comes in both 8GB and 16GB models, which are available for preorder at $399 and $499.
