Viking Boat Burial Site of the Day: Archaelogists report that they’ve found the UK mainland’s first-ever fully intact Viking boat burial site. The site, located at Ardnamurchan in Scotland’s west Highlands, is believed to be over 1,000 years old.
The find included a body, the objects buried with it — including a sword, spear, and axe head — and 200 rivets from the burial boat itself. The 16-foot-long grave also contained a whetstone from Norway, a ring pin from Ireland, and Viking pottery.
One of the co-directors of the project, Dr. Hannah Cobb of the University of Manchester, says these artifacts make this “one of the most important Norse graves ever excavated in Britain.”
