Akira Movie Update of the Day: The Akira live action remake has officially been given the green light after several delays, a change of directors, and many rumored stars (including Keanu Reeves and Leonardo DiCaprio).
The movie’s budget has been slashed from $150 million to $90 million, but filming will finally begin in February or March of 2012, with Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, Unknown) at the helm.
Garrett Hedlund, best known for Tron: Legacy, is reportedly the frontrunner to star as Kaneda, the leader of a Neo Tokyo bike gang.
Variety reports that “it’s only a matter of time” before Hedlund is officially announced for the role. Hey, at least his work on Tron has given him some experience a riding cool-looking bike.
Collet-Serra, Hedlund and co. will have their work cut out for them, adapting a classic anime on a reduced budget. What are the chances they’ll pull it off?
