Daylight Saving Time Explanation of the Day: With Daylight Saving Time about to end for this year (in the U.S., anyway), blogger C.G.P. Grey picked an apt time to post a video explaining why we need all this clock-changing nonsense in the first place.
Short answer: we don’t. Daylight Saving Time gives more sunlight in the summer, which is only desirable in some regions of the world, and it may not even save on energy costs, depending on where you live.
As Grey points out, DST also takes away an hour of sleep, usually on a Monday, and makes people less productive for an entire week after it goes into effect. “Daylight Saving Monday” also carries an increased rate of suicide.
Back before we had energy-efficient lighting and constant international communication via the Internet, DST did make some sense. Especially if you lived in New Zealand and needed that extra summer hour to build up your bug collection.
