New IBM CEO of the Day: Virginia “Ginni” Rommetty, 54, will become the new CEO of IBM on January 1st, succeeding current CEO Sam Palmisano. She’ll be the first woman to hold the position.
Rometty, 54, has been at IBM for three decades, most recently as the company’s head of sales, marketing and strategy. As CEO, she’ll be in charge of implementing a business strategy she helped create.
“I’ve been head of strategy at IBM and together with my colleagues built our five-year plan. My priorities are going to be to continue to execute on that,” she told Businessweek.
Rometty will take the reins of an IBM that very profitably shifted from the PC business to consulting services and software during Palmisano’s 10-year tenure. Analysts say Rometty’s business background makes her well-suited to continue that strategy.
