How to Stop a Plane in Two Seconds of the Day

How to Stop a Jet in Two Seconds of the Day: The U.S. Navy’s incredible Mark 7 Mod 3 arresting gear can stop a jet on the deck of an aircraft carrier in just two seconds, absorbing up to 47,500,000 foot-pounds of energy.

The gear starts with four arresting wires, any of which can grab the tailhook of a landing jet. Two additional 1100-foot wires run from the arresting wires to the arresting gear engine below deck, where they pull a giant plunger into a cylinder full of hydraulic fluid, compressing the air in the cylinder to 650 psi and stopping the jet.

After the jump, take a look at the below-deck part of the system, and watch an arresting gear officer explain how it works.
