Follow Up of the Day: FTC Launches Carrier IQ Investigation

Follow Up of the Day: The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into allegations that mobile analytics firm Carrier IQ collected private data from 150 million cellphone users and given it to mobile carriers, FTC officials have confirmed to the Washington Post.

Carrier IQ execs, including CEO Larry Lenhart and VP of Marketing Andrew Coward, were in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to meet with the FTC and the Federal Communications Commission.

A spokesperson for the company told the Post, “We are complying with all investigations at this time as we have nothing to hide. We have been completely transparent through this process.”

The investigation comes just after the FBI revealed that it has documents relating to Carrier IQ, but won’t disclose their contents because they’re part of “law enforcement records.”

The FBI hasn’t commented on whether it’s been using Carrier IQ’s software for domestic surveillance, or whether it’s looking into the company itself.
