Lawsuit Over Twitter Followers of the Day: Social media professional Noah Kravitz is being sued by his former employer, PhoneDog, over the 17,000 Twitter followers he amassed while tweeting for the company.
Kravitz says that when he left PhoneDog, the company told him he could keep his Twitter account if he agreed to “tweet on their behalf every once in a while.” So, he switched the name of his account from @phonedog_noah to @noahkravitz and went on his way.
Now, PhoneDog wants $2.50 for every follower he took with him.
In a statement, the company said, “The costs and resources invested by Phonedog Media into growing its followers, fans and general brand awareness through social media are substantial and are considered property of Phonedog Media.”
Kravitz, who now has 22,000 followers, says the suit is retaliation for his attempts to collect the advertising revenue he was owed as a partner in PhoneDog and back pay for some blog posts and video reviews he did for the company.
Whoever wins, this case has already opened the door for companies to treat Twitter followers as valuable property. As ReadWriteWeb points out, you’d better get a policy in writing before you take a job as a professional tweeter.
