Firefly Fans Fighting Censorship of the Day: Back in September, University of Wisconsin-Stout professor James Miller had a Firefly poster removed from his office door by campus administration, because the school felt the Captain Mal quote on the poster was “threatening.”
In the context of the show, the quote — “You don’t know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: if I ever kill you, you’ll be awake. You’ll be facing me, and you’ll be armed” — was actually about honor and trustworthiness.
Firefly fans teamed up with sci-fi author Neil Gaiman and representatives from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education to protest the censorship of the poster (and the misinterpretation of their favorite show).
And the Browncoats won! The university has relented and allowed Miller to continue exercising free speech (and fandom) on his door.
