Lunar Alien Search of the Day

Lunar Alien Search of the Day

Lunar Alien Search of the Day: The smartest place to conduct a search for extraterrestrial life might be the Earth’s own moon, according to a paper by Paul Davies and Robert Wagner of Arizona State University.

The moon’s lack of atmosphere means any traces left by visiting aliens are likely to be perfectly preserved, even after millions of year. And thanks to high-res images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, it’s easier than ever to check the moon for signs of extraterrestrial life.

Plus, as Davies and Wagner point out, the moon has the advantage of being closer to Earth than anywhere else we could look.

They think a good way to handle the search would be to crowdsource the task of looking through thousands of LRO images, the way the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has crowdsourced the analysis of radio telescope data to millions of personal computers.

That’s not to say that there’s a great chance that there are alien artifacts on the lunar surface, but if they do exist, we have a way to find them.
