New York Times Spam of the Day: A spam email that appears to be from the New York Times has been sent out to Times home delivery subscribers and others who have never purchased subscriptions.
Times spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha has confirmed that the email — which offered home delivery at “50% off for 16 weeks” — is spam. The newspaper is currently “working to coordinate a response.”
According to BusinessInsider, the email came from an IP address registered to Epsilon Interactive, an email service provider that had its email lists stolen in a hack earlier this year.
The Times hasn’t yet commented on the possibility that the email address that sent the message — nytimes@email.newyorktimes.com — has been hacked.
Take a look at the suspicious email message after the jump.
UPDATE: The New York Times has now confirmed that the email was actually sent by a Times employee, although it was intended for 300 subscribers, not the 8 million people who received it.
