Apple Fan Monkeys of the Day: This year, humans weren’t the only species with iPads on their Christmas lists. The orangutans at the Milwaukee County Zoo have been playing with the popular tablets since they were introduced to them six months ago.
Conservationist Richard Zimmerman of Orangutan Outreach said the idea occurred to him as soon as iPads hit the market. When a supporter of the zoo showed an orangutan his iPad, they found the apes “were fascinated by it.”
A few times a week, the primates get to play with the tablets “almost as a human child would do with basic curiosity.” A zookeeper helps them play games, paint, and watch videos.
Zimmerman says the next step is getting wi-fi access so the apes can connect with other orangutans in different zoos with video chat.
