Sherlock Sexism Controversy of the Day: The series premiere of the BBC’s Sherlock seems to have caused a bit of a stir, based on its portrayal of Sherlock Holmes’ adversary/love interest Irene Adler.
The Guardian‘s Jane Clare Jones took issue with Steven Moffat’s departure from the original Arthur Conan Doyle story, saying he’s reduced Adler to “a high-class dominatrix saved only from certain death by the dramatic intervention of our hero.”
You may want to take that accusation with a grain of salt, though. Several commenters on the column argued that Moffat’s version of Adler was every bit the intellectual equal of Holmes, and that the great detective showed just as much emotional weakness as “The Woman.”
What do you think? Did Moffat get Irene Adler right?
