Star Wars TV Series Update of the Day: Producer Rick McCallum is on tour to promote Red Tails, Lucasfilm’s upcoming movie about the Tuskegee Airmen, and he’s also been fielding some questions about the rumored Star Wars live-action TV series.
Last we heard, the series has 50 hours’ worth of scripts, will be set between episodes 3 and 4, and is a Godfather-like tale about the seamy underbelly of crime on Coruscant during the rise of the Galactic Empire.
In an interview with IGN, McCallum let some new details slip. Most importantly, the show now has a working title: Star Wars: Underworld.
LucasFilm’s target budget for each Underworld episode is $5 million, but McCallum says there’s no way they can make them for that little with the technology that’s available right now, because the show includes several digitally animated characters.
The plan is to wait a couple of years and watch the changes in animation technology and delivery methods — Lucas hasn’t decided on a cable network or digital distribution — and then make the show “if we’re still alive.”
Well, that really inspires some confidence.
If the show does get made, though, McCallum says each episode will be “bigger than any of the prequels were,” and describes the series as “complex,” “dark,” and “adult.” Sounds like it could be worth the wait.
