Build-a-Tricorder Competition of the Day: The X-Prize Foundation, which famously awarded a prize to the commercial launch vehicle SpaceShipOne back in 2004, has just launched a competition to build a working Star Trek tricorder.
The foundation, teaming up with Qualcomm, will give $10 million to the team that builds a portable, wireless device that can diagnose 15 distinct diseases. There’s a five-pound weight limit, but the exact design of the tricorder is otherwise up to the competitors.
The contest will run for three and a half years, and then “the winner will be the team whose technology most accurately diagnoses a set of diseases independent of a healthcare professional or facility, and that provides the best consumer user experience with their device,” the foundation writes.
Now all we need is a Holodeck X-Prize and we’ll practically be living on the Enterprise.
