Weibo Real Name Policy of the Day: The Chinese government will require users of social networks to register using their real names as part of a crackdown on “Internet rumors.”
Registering a new account on Sina Weibo — the most popular Chinese microblogging service, with over 250 million registered users — will require users to verify their real names via text message, and current account holders have three months to do the same or lose posting privileges.
Microblogging provides an alternative to state-controlled news in China, and the most-discussed topic on Sina Weibo over the past year was a deadly train crash in Wenzhou that had critics suspecting a state cover-up.
U.S. social networks, including Google+, have also experimented with real name policies, leading to major backlash from users.
