MediaFire Comments on Megaupload Situation of the Day: With the Justice Department shutdown of major file sharing site Megaupload and the arrest of its founders, as well as voluntary shutdowns by a number of similar sites, the CEO of MediaFire is confident that his company won’t face the same problems.
In an interview with VentureBeat, Derek Labian explained the difference between MediaFire and Megaupload: “We don’t have a business built on copyright infringement.”
“Like many other cloud-based sharing services like Box.net and Dropbox, we’re a legitimate business targeting professionals,” he said.
Labian described Megaupload as “shady,” because of its practice of allegedly paying users to upload copyrighted content, and says MediaFire would rather not have pirates using its service.
To back up his claims about legitimate business uses for MediaFire, Labian can point to the fact that employees at 86% of the Fortune 500 are using the service to share large work-related files.
He says the company’s next step is to release an update focusing on business users, designed to compete with cloud storage providers like Box.net and Dropbox.
