Megaupload Update of the Day

Megaupload Update of the Day

Megaupload Update of the Day: A New Zealand judge put off deciding whether to grant bail to embattled Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom this morning, with a prosecutor arguing that Dotcom’s four dozen credit cards and “history of fleeing criminal charges” make him an extreme flight risk.

Dotcom’s lawyer argued that his credit cards are mostly expired, and that his large physical size would make it unlikely he could slip through New Zealand’s immigration lines unnoticed.

No new date has been set for the decision.

The Megaupload founder’s New Zealand residency has also been called into question, as it appears he bought his way into the country back in 2010. Due to his “colorful past,” Dotcom had to buy around $8 million in government bonds before immigration officials let him in under “investor plus” status.

Meanwhile, Megaupload has dropped its lawsuit against Universal Music Group for improperly having a star-studded Megaupload music video removed from YouTube.

The fight over the video isn’t over yet, though: Megaupload’s lawyers are continuing with claims against the as-yet-unnamed parties who actually took the video down, which means demanding answers from Google about YouTube’s private arrangements with music labels.

Hacktivist group Anonymous has also been hard at work continuing its revenge spree for the takedown of Megaupload. The latest targets include Universal Music Group (again), major music label Vivendi, and CBS.com. In the CBS hack, Anonymous apparently skipped the DDoS attacks and just deleted the entire website.
