SOPA in Canada of the Day

SOPA in Canada of the Day

SOPA in Canada of the Day: Although SOPA and PIPA may be off the table for now, a similar measure is being pushed in Canada, according to legal columnist Michael Geist.

Geist says the music industry is leading an effort to change Canadian copyright bill C-11 to include a new provision that would “permit a court to make an order blocking a pirate site such as The Pirate Bay to protect the Canadian marketplace from foreign pirate sites,” which sounds an awful lot like the website-blocking section of SOPA.

The music industry is also pushing to include another SOPA-esque measure that would allow the government to shut down any site with “services that are primarily operated to enable infringement or which induce infringement.” Other supporters of the provision include the Entertainment Software Association of Canada and (rumor has it) the U.S. government.

Geist reports that Bill C-11 committee members have mentioned that particular change in recent interviews, so it’s likely there will be an attempt to add it to the bill.
