Julian Assange on the Simpsons of the Day: Less than a week after WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange announced he’ll host his own TV show on Russia Today, Entertainment Weekly reports that Assange also has an upcoming guest spot on The Simpsons.
Assange’s role came about when Simpsons creator Matt Groening heard a rumor that the controversial leakster was going to be on the show, and asked casting director Bonnie Pietila to make it happen.
Assange recorded his part over the summer from an undisclosed location. “I was just given a number to call,” said showrunner Al Jean.
He’ll appear on the milestone 500th episode of the show, playing a new neighbor the Simpsons meet when they go off the grid and into the woods after discovering the town of Springfield wants to kick them out for all the trouble they’ve caused over the years.
Jean says Assange’s role doesn’t directly deal with any of the legal trouble he’s in. “We wanted to make sure it was satirical,” he said, “and he was willing to do that.”
Previously, the closest thing to Assange on The Simpsons was a Springfield kid (above) who some say bears an uncanny likeness to the Wikileaks chief.
The episode airs February 19th.
