Alternate Blue Marble Image of the Day

Alternate Blue Marble Photo of the Day

Alternate Blue Marble Image of the Day: When NASA released a new “Blue Marble” image — a high-resolution view of Earth created from images taken by the Suomi NPP satellite — last week, users called the agency out for choosing a view of North America for the photo.

To give the other half of the world its due (and because these images are amazing), NASA has now released a second Blue Marble, showing the Eastern Hemisphere.

The new image is available at a resolution of 11500 x 11500 pixels, compared to only 8000 x 8000 for the first one (and 2048 x 2048 for the original Blue Marble that served as the default wallpaper for the iPhone).

These images have been extremely well-received. After just a week, Flickr reported that the Western Hemisphere Blue Marble had been viewed 3.1 million times, making it one of the most popular Flickr photos of all time.
