Kinect for Windows Release of the Day

Kinect for Windows Release of the Day

Kinect for Windows Release of the Day: Microsoft’s Kinect for Windows sensor and software development kit are now officially available to the public.

Kinect for Windows does a lot of things that Kinect for Xbox can’t, like running up to four Kinect sensors at once and using a new “Near Mode” to detect objects as close as 40 centimeters away.

That makes the Kinect useful for more than just games. Microsoft wants to see the device in manufacturing, retail, health care and many more industries. And hardware hackers want to use it as a makeshift 3D scanner.

Kinect for Windows is a bit pricier than its Xbox sibling, retailing for $249 to the Xbox version’s $129.99. If you’re a “qualified educational user,” it gets a bit cheaper, at $149.
