Mona Lisa Discovery of the Day

Mona Lisa Discovery of the Day

Mona Lisa Discovery of the Day: Curators at Spain’s Prado Museum have unveiled the earliest known copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous “Mona Lisa,” and revealed that it may have been painted at the same time — or even in the same room — as the original.

Restorers removed a coat of black paint — added in the 18th century — from the copy, and found a backdrop similar to Leonardo’s original. The museum says x-ray tests have revealed changes to the painting that correspond to changes da Vinci made to his version.

The copy is now believed to be the work of an apprentice, Francesco Melzi, who could have been standing next to the master as he painted.

The “Mona Lisa of the Prado” will be on display in Madrid this month, and then it will head to the Louvre for a side-by-side showing with the original in March.
