Sugar Regulation Proposal of the Day: A group of scientists, writing in Nature, argue that sugar should be regulated by governments just like alcohol and tobacco.
Robert H. Lustig, Laura A. Schmidt and Claire D. Brindis wrote that sugar is just as toxic as the other two substances, calling it “one of the primary culprits behind this worldwide health crisis.”
The scientists say worldwide sugar consumption has tripled over the past 50 years, leading to an obesity epidemic.
They also draw a direct comparison between sugar and alcohol, saying the two substances act on the same areas of the brain to encourage further consumption, and that sugar is similarly toxic because it disrupts the body’s metabolism.
The Sugar Association, not surprisingly, disagrees with their position.
“We are confident that the American people are perfectly capable of choosing what foods to eat without stark regulations and unreasonable bans imposed upon them,” said the organization.
