Follow Up of the Day: Russian Scientists Reach Lake Vostok

Follow Up of the Day: Reports of a team of Russian researchers disappearing during a drilling expedition to Antarctica’s subterranean Lake Vostok turned out to be a bit of a false alarm.

The team, from Russia’s Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), is now back in communication and has reportedly reached the surface of the underground lake, which was buried under 2 and a half miles of ice.

No details of the successful mission have been released, but scientists say this is the first time Lake Vostok has been exposed to air in more than 20 million years.
