Space Dive of the Day: This summer, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner will attempt to break the record for longest freefall by jumping from the edge of space — 120,000 feet up — and breaking the speed of sound on his way to a safe landing, 5 minutes and 30 seconds later.
Baumgartner’s feat will be aided by a pressurized capsule and a custom spacesuit, courtesy of the David Clark company.
The capsule will take Baumgartner safely up to altitude for the jump, and the suit, which uses a gas-filled bladder to maintain pressure throughout the fall, will keep him from suffocating and stop his blood from boiling.
There’s still the risk that Baumgartner could black out before he can open his chute, but he wouldn’t be a daredevil without a little risk.
After the jump: a video about the suit and Baumgartner’s other preparations for the big space dive.
