Woolly Mammoth Sighting of the Day: A woolly mammoth, an animal that has been extinct for 4,000 years, has allegedly been caught on video crossing an icy river in Siberia.
The blurry video was filmed last year in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia by a government engineer who was surveying for a new road.
Its hair is a match for mammoth remains found in Russia’s permafrost, The Sun reports. It’s not clear how a hair sample was collected from the beast or who conducted the tests.
Paranormal writer Michael Cohen believes the animal seen in the video could be a mammoth, because “Rumors of a handful of mammoths still kicking around in the vast wilderness of Siberia have been circulating for decades and occasionally sightings by locals have occurred.”
Others think it’s a hoax, and looks more like a regular elephant or, probably the most likely explanation, a bear eating a fish.
Watch the video after the jump and judge for yourself.
