Alan Moore on the Guy Fawkes Mask of the Day: V for Vendetta creator Alan Moore has made no secret of his approval of the way the comic’s famous Guy Fawkes mask has been co-opted as the symbol of Anonymous, Occupy Wall Street, and other protest movements around the world.
He shared some of his thoughts on the mask and the movements in an opinion piece for the BBC, explaining how the mask’s 17th century origins make it an ideal icon for modern protestors.
Moore believes that the “wildly uninformed guess at our political future” that he made in V for Vendetta has turned out to be pretty accurate, and he ends the piece by saying “it feels something like V for validation.”
