NASA Shuts Down Last Mainframe of the Day

NASA Shuts Down Last Mainframe of the Day: NASA has shut down its last mainframe computer, an IBM Z9 located at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL, the agency announced today.

In a blog post, NASA Chief Information Officer Linda Cureton called the shutdown “the end of an era,” and reminisced about the heyday of house-sized mainframes that ran on “green cards” full of assembly code.

The mainframe was being kept around because it was needed to run some legacy software, but NASA has retired its outdated apps, and the mainframe’s duties can now be handled by computers smaller than a refrigerator.
